All Years Resolutions

Happy New Years! We’ve made it through another year and surely, most of us are thinking about the ways we can improve ourselves (aka: new year resolutions). For many, fitness and healthy eating are on the list of things to improve and we agree that it is important. Unfortunately, this initiative of going to the gym and eating healthier only lasts for a few months before the momentum is lost. According to Dr. John Agwunobi, chief health and nutrition officer for Herbalife, only 8% of people truly achieve their resolutions.

Why is this number so low? “Realistic goals – that’s where people fall down so many times,” said Frank Farley, a professor of educational psychology at Temple University in Philadelphia. This is often seen in fitness goals when people plan to exercise everyday and to lose weight within a short period of time. Even for regular gym goers and avid dieters, this can be difficult. Therefore, expecting to achieve this goal without prior experience with healthy diets and exercise regimes is quite unrealistic.

To set ourselves out on a better foot, it may be a good idea to think for the long term. Instead of trying to achieve health goals within a few months, aim to adjust fitness and eating habits over a longer duration. Since the changes are less drastic, achieving your resolutionss should be easier. Plan to exercise a few times a week and gradually increase the frequency or intensity as you get used to it. Pick healthier meals options a few times a week and make more changes as you go on.

With progressive steady changes and realistic planning, you’ll definitely make your resolutions this year! So what are you doing? Get out there and make this the best year ever!
